Dimple's step-mother told her husband "I have come to your house with my own dreams as your wife. I am not here to serve this wretched legless child. Throw her out of the house ..either she or me".
Father moaned: "Where can I take the girl? And what about the younger son?"
Father had a soft corner for Dimple, could not throw her out and the outcome, step-mother started to avenge the child…mercilessly. She actually kept burning wood/charcoal on Dimple's hands, elbows scalding her which she could not bare, cried aloud but how can she escape? Move away? Neighbors saved the child on that day and when the father returned from farm work, every one advised him, "Do something, child will die someday".
The father was in a pitiable condition. He thought "How can I take care of Dimple day and night? Who will earn for the family? If I pickup quarrel with my new wife, she will punish the child still more,"
Some well - wisher suggested to take her to Hajipur.
Father asked" Is there any Institute? What is there?"
The well-wisher became poetic .He said, " No, there is no Institute… only mother's love, mother's lap. There is a lady who looks after sixty girls like your daughter, all suffering from polio, all coming from different villages. She takes better care than their parents- Better take Dimple to Hajipur"
Seeing no way out, Dimple was entrusted to Niruben's care. The father and well-wisher returned with heavy heart…leaving Dimple crying. She could not be comforted: Even Niruben tried her best and then asked " Do you still want to go to your step mother even after she scalded you?
Dimple's answer broke even Niruben's heart -made her speechless. Dimple still sobbing said "No but I am worried of my brother, he is younger to me, what will happen to him if my step mother will scald him?

One evening a police constable, in his full uniform, entered the gates of Manthan. Accompanied was the police authority-attitude and curt behavior which is exercised by all policemen everywhere anytime: He asked curtly - as if he was looking for a culprit- " Who is Niruben? Where is she?" Unperturbed by the curtness, he got a cool, full of confidence, sweet reply : " Here I am; I am Niruben; Niruben Raval; whom do you want? What can I do for you? Do you want to take away any one?" By this sweet response, police constable calmed down a little and told: "We do not want to take away any one: we only want to leave this orphan girl.
Niruben's attention then went to a small, fragile 5 yrs old girl, full of fear, afraid of everything-everyone, hiding herself..
Niruben observed: "How can I accept her, Manthan is for disabled girls and this one seems to be alright".
